Golden Globes 2019: The Americans Wins Best Drama Series

At long last, The Americans has finally won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series for its sixth and final season. FX's critically adored spy drama beat out Bodyguard, Homecoming, Killing Eve and Pose at the 76th Golden Globes Awards Sunday night. The Americans is a returning series that beat a bunch first-season shows, a rarity for the Golden Globes, which prefers to honor new shows (The second season of last year's winner, The Handmaid's Tale, wasn't even nominated). It's the first FX series to win the drama series award since Nip/Tuck in 2004.

The Americans tells the story of a pair of Soviet spies living deep undercover in '80s Washington, D.C.; so undercover, in fact, that they're married and have a family. Their kids are American. Season 6 concluded the story with a series finale that TV Guide's Tim Surette describes as "one of the greatest ever, answering all the questions we had from the pilot by keeping it simple." Stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell were also nominated for Golden Globes. The Americans' final season won two Emmys in 2018, one for Rhys' performance as Phil Jennings and one for writing.
