Dude just ruined the proposal game for all men forever

Director Glenn Weiss, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special as a reward for directing the Oscars, showed he really knows how to put on show when he proposed to his girlfriend during the 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday.

Weiss started his speech on a sad note, noting that his mother died two weeks ago. After paying tribute to his mom in a bittersweet moment of victory, Weiss shocked the world -- and his girlfriend Jan Svendsen -- by asking Svendsen to marry him.

"Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan," he said. "Jan, you are the sunshine in my life and Mom was right: don't ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife."

Weiss then did the damn thing and put a ring on in front of the whole world as Svendsen joined him onstage. "This is the ring that my dad put on my mom's finger 67 years ago," Weiss said, making a note to his siblings that their dad gave him the ring and it wasn't secretly swiped. "I want to put this ring that my mom wore on your finger in front of all these people, in front of my mom and your parents watching from above. Will you marry me?"

Svendsen said yes, of course, keeping her composure as she strode up there to get her rock and her man, shocking everyone in the room and at home.

Backstage, Weiss told the press that the ring he proposed with wasn't a traditional engagement ring, but rather his mother's wedding band. "I have to say it's not a diamond ring but my mom's wedding ring, which to me is more valuable than the Hope Diamond," Weiss said. "It's very precious to me. Yes, walking around the red carpet like nothing is happening with this thing in my pocket was kind of a nerve-wracking experience to be honest with you because there was this incredibly valuable thing, right here, but now it's where it belongs."
