GLAAD Awards Honor Smash, Dancing with the Stars

Days after receiving an early renewal for Season 2, Smash was honored by GLAAD's Media Awards Saturday in New York City.

Two of the show's producers, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, accepted the Vito Russo award for special recognition. Zadan said being gay was "part of who I am, so it impacts the work that we do," according to Reuters. Meron recalled years spent trying to "fight, persuade and manipulate" Hollywood to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters and stories.

NBC renews Smash for second season

Hosted by Glee's Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, the ceremony also honored Dancing with the Stars as outstanding reality show for featuring transgender contestant Chaz Bono. HBO's Cinema Verite was named best TV movie or miniseries, and Oprah Winfrey's "Coming Out on the Oprah Show: 25 Years of Unforgettable Guests" won best talk-show episode.

Other winners included Lady Gaga, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and CNN's Anderson Cooper 360.

GLAAD will also host ceremonies next month in Los Angeles and in San Francisco in June.
