Girl Rising Documentary Premieres Ahead of On-Demand Release

Girl Rising, a documentary spotlighting the impact of education on underprivileged girls, held its world premiere Wednesday ahead of its groundbreaking, on-demand theatrical debut.
Held at New York's Paris Theatre, the premiere drew the likes of Girls star Allison Williams, Blue Bloods actress Sami Gayle, Grimm's Claire Coffee, Jeff Zucker, Lauren Bush Lauren, and journalists John Hockenberry, Connie Chung, Lesley Stahl, Holly Peterson and Cathie Black.
The film will open in theaters across the country with the help of Gathr, a company that crowd-sources film distribution, allowing moviegoers to request a screening of a film at a local theater. Thus far, 438 Girl Rising screenings are being organized nationwide, with more than 37,000 tickets pre-reserved. New screening requests for Girl Rising are coming in at about 40 per day. Girl Rising will also have a traditional theatrical run through March 15 in New York and Los Angeles.Directed by Oscar nominee and Scandalwriter Richard E. Robbins, Girl Rising is part of 10x10, a global campaign to educate and empower underprivileged girls. The film follows nine girls in places like India, Peru, Haiti, Ethiopia and Cambodia, and is narrated by such stars as Kerry Washington, Salma Hayek, Selena Gomez, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Chloe Grace Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto and Meryl Streep.
