Finally! The first teaser for Game of Thrones' final season has arrived, and while it doesn't give much away, we can still flail about it all we want.
In the short, 39-second video, we see the Painted Table — a table shaped in the map of Westeros at Dragonstone — going through some major changes. As ice creeps down the map, enveloping both a dragon and a wolf figurine, fire encroaches up from the south, burning the lion figurine sitting at the capital.
The first metaphor is pretty easy to dissect: Winter is coming and so are the white walkers, and right now, Jon (Kit Harington) and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) are the only two rulers standing against the icy invasion. The fact that their family symbols have been frozen isn't exactly encouraging, but the Lannisters' implied fate feels worse. The last time we saw Cersei (Lena Headey), Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) had left her and her scheming ways behind, riding north to presumably help Dany and Jon fight the war between the living and the dead. We always knew Cersei would one day be consumed by her own destructive nature, but could her end be even more fiery than her Sept of Baelor plot? If so... yikes.
At the end of the teaser, fire and ice actually collide, and the outcome looks predictably dark. The final clash between these three houses is definitely going to leave destruction in its wake.
Game of Thrones' eighth and final season debuts in April 2019 on HBO.
