Did You Catch That Celebrity Cameo in the Game of Thrones Premiere?

Yes, yes, Game of Thrones is still doing the celebrity cameo thing, even after the Ed Sheeran incident of 2017.

This time, it was It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney whose familiar face could be spotted for a split second onscreen during the Thrones season premiere.

He showed up ever so briefly in the sequence when -- as Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbæk) was, um, otherwise occupied in King's Landing -- Theon (Alfie Allen) seized the opportunity to rescue Yara (Gemma Whelan) from his uncle's ship. Theon and his mini-hit squad took down the ironborn guarding her, including McElhenney's unnamed fleetsman, who got an arrow through the eye for his betrayal of Balon's trueborn heir(s).

"Don't blink," McElhenney cheekily wrote in the caption of an image of his ruined face.

Tough break, fella.

McElhenney's guest appearance capped a long, delightfully unlikely relationship between Sunny and Thrones. It started when McElhenney met Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss at a party, and they said they were fans of his show, which led to them writing an episode of Sunny in 2013. The producers returned in Season 12 to guest-star as obnoxious waterpark employees. So McElhenney's cameo was returning the favor. (In an additional bit of crossover, longtime Sunny director Matt Shakman directed two episodes of Game of Thrones Season 7.)

And speaking of Game of Thrones cameos, the Season 8 premiere also seemed to confirm the unfortunate fate of Ed Sheeran's character.

In the scene when Bronn (Jerome Flynn) was enjoying the company of three women, they gabbed about the Loot Train Attack and how much damage Daenerys' (Emilia Clarke) dragons did to the Lannister forces. In addition to finding out that "tall, handsome William" lost his eyelids in the skirmish, the ladies also mention "that boy Eddie," "the ginger," who "came back with his face burnt right off."

We don't know if his vocal chords remained intact enough to keep singing "Hands of Gold," but that update probably means we won't be seeing Sheeran return to the show any time soon. Hey, at least we know that even the most hilariously awkward and forced cameo characters will get some closure as we near the endgame in the final season!
