Well, it was fun while it lasted, but coffee time is over on Game of Thrones. HBO has digitally removed the java cup heard 'round Westeros after eagle-eyed fans spotted the accidental 20th Century prop in Sunday's episode, "The Last of the Starks."
A leftover from craft services, the cup randomly appeared on the head table for a moment in the Great Hall scene when Dany was stewing over the Wildlings fawning over Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his bravery for riding a dragon — a feat which she had accomplished a hundred times over, no doubt.
The cable network had previously addressed the snafu by issuing a cheeky statement which read, "The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea."
Game of Thrones executive producer Bernie Caulfield also revealed during a radio show appearance (via IndieWire) that at first, she didn't think the slip actually happened. "I can't believe [it]. I mean, our prop people and decorators are so on it a thousand percent ... Nowadays, you can't believe what you see because people can put things into a photo that doesn't really exist," she explained. Of course, revisiting the episode itself revealed that the spotting was legitimate, so she had to admit, "But I guess maybe it was there, I'm not sure. But yeah, we're sorry!"
Now that HBO has scrubbed it from the episode, though, we kinda miss the little cup. It at least gave us a reason to smile at an episode that was otherwise unnerving for all the wrong reasons. At least we'll always have the meme-ry.
