Fringe has been renewed for a third season, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
The sci-fi series, executive produced by J.J. Abrams, has struggled ratings-wise in its second season after moving from Tuesdays at 9/8c to the competitive Thursday at 9/8c timeslot.
Fringe has averaged 7.6 million viewers this season, compared to an average of 9.96 million viewers in its first year. The most recent episode on Feb. 4 attracted 7.76 million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the adults age 18-49 demo. However, the series has played well on DVR. The Feb. 4 episode surged 36 percent in the demo from DVR viewings.
The series' renewal was first reported by EW.
Fringe will return with new episodes on April 1.
