Fear the Walking Dead: Ruben Blades and Daniel Sharman (?!) Are Returning in Season 5

One return was expected, the other was far from it

Two familiar faces absent from Season 4 will be returning to Fear the Walking Dead in Season 5, according to Comicbook.com. One of those returning actors, Ruben Blades, was expected to come back, but the other, Daniel Sharman, is a total surprise as his character seemingly died in Season 3.

Blades, in an interview with Panamanian news outlet Día a Día, confirmed that he would be appearing in the upcoming season of Fear the Walking Dead, which recently went into production. His schedule prevented him from appearing in Season 4, but showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg were always open about their intention to bring him back when he was available (Blades' primary occupation is music, not acting). His character, Daniel Salazar, was last seen in the Season 3 finale. He presumably survived the dam explosion, but did not reunite with Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) and her group.

The report that Sharman will be returning is much more surprising. Sharman's character Troy Otto seemingly died in the penultimate episode of Season 3 when Madison bashed him in the head with a hammer. No details about how many episodes Sharman will appear in or what his character will be doing are available, but Comicbook.com reasonably speculates that he will appear in flashbacks or in one of Althea's (Maggie Grace) interviews that was taped when he was still alive.

His return is also a surprise because unstable young Broke Jaw Ranch soldier Troy Otto was a major part of Season 3, but the events of that season were mostly ignored in the rebooted fourth season, which saw new showrunners take over from co-creator Dave Erickson and change basically everything about the show. Sharman's scenes were mostly with Kim Dickens and Frank Dillane, both of whom were written off the show in Season 4 as their characters were killed. And since Dickens and Dillane are highly unlikely to return, who knows who Troy will be interacting with in Season 5.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 will premiere in 2019.
