The latest installment in The Fast and Furious franchise revved up the box office, breaking records for the biggest April opening ever, Box Office Mojo reports.
Fast Five grossed an estimated $83.6 million, and also broke Rio's mark for the year's biggest opening. Rio finished a distant second with $14.4 million — though in its third weekend it broke $100 million.
Rio tops box office, breaks record for 2011
Coming in third was Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, which took in $10 million. Water for Elephants ranked No. 4, drawing $9.1 million.
The weekend's two other new releases, Prom and Hoodwinked Too!, followed in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Prom attracted $5 million and Hoodwinked Too! garnered $4.1 million.
Soul Surfercame in at No. 7, with $3.3 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Insidious (No. 8, $2.6 million), Hop (No. 9, $2.5 million, for a total of $105.3 million) and Source Code (No. 10, $2.53 million).
