Fall TV Editors' Picks: Find Out Why Black-ish Is the New Cosby Show We All Need

It's been 30 years since The Cosby Show premiered and though sitcoms featuring primarily black characters have since found homes on BET, TBS or OWN, Black-ish will finally bring a black family back to a major network — and it's about time.

It's been 30 years since The Cosby Show premiered and though sitcoms featuring primarily black characters have since found homes on BET, TBS or OWN, Black-ish will finally bring a black family back to a major network — and it's about time.

The family dynamics within Black-ish feel delightfully familiar when you look back on Bill Cosby's charming way of "dadspaining," Cliff and Clair's exasperated, but always loving parenting techniques, as well as the couple's playful and sexy relationship. But Black-ish shakes up the formula a bit by having the father of Anthony Anderson's Andre Johnson be a permanent fixture in the Johnson home. (The fact that this character is played by Laurence Fishburne is a fantastic bonus.)

And much like Cliff Huxtable, Andre takes great pride not only in being black, but being a successful black man in modern America. Though Black-ish tackles social issues, such as race, more directly than Cosby did, the ABC series always maintains its lighthearted universal appeal.

Every fall, TVGuide.com's editorial staff chooses their picks for the best shows of the new season. Check out why Black-ish made our list:

Black-ish premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
