Oscar-Nominated Actress Eileen Brennan Dies at 80

Eileen Brennan, who earned an Oscar nomination for Private Benjamin, died on Sunday, The Wrap reports. She was 80.The actress passed away in a Burbank, Calif., hospice, where she had been battling bladder cancer.

The actress passed away in a Burbank, Calif., hospice, where she had been battling bladder cancer.
Brennan began her career in an off-Broadway production of Little Mary Sunshine in 1959. Her starring performance was recognized with a Theatre World "Promising New Personality" Award, alongside eight other actors, including Warren BeattyJane Fonda and Carol Burnett.

She worked alongside Carol ChanningDustin HoffmanDebbie Reynolds and Dick Van Dyke before showing off her dramatic acting skills in 1971'sThe Last Picture Show. Brennan went on to appear in the 1974 Best Picture Oscar winner The Sting and the cult classic Clue, in which she played Mrs. Peacock.Though Brennan lost out on the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1981, she reprised her Private Benjamin role as drill captain Doreen Lewis for three seasons on CBS' series adaptation, for which she earned an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
