Downton Abbey: What's Bates' Next Step?

Mr. Green better watch his back.
On Sunday'sDownton Abbey, Bates (Brendan Coyle) finally got tipped off about Anna's (Joanne Froggatt) assailant when she inadvertently stopped speaking mid-sentence upon seeing Mr. Green (Nigel Harman). Bates had suspected him in the first place, but was misled by Anna, who is convinced her husband will kill Green and thus be tried for murder again.

I don't think there's any danger in that, or else we'd be done with this show for good. If Bates was unwilling to go to America and leave Anna alone, we don't think he'll risk being parted from her again to go to prison. That would be an even more wretched existence for her.
At this point, it seems like Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is their best ally. She already interceded on the couple's behalf this episode by speaking to Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville). If she knew that Green was the culprit, perhaps she could speak to Gillingham (Tom Cullen), since he never liked his valet anyway. If the upper class gets involved with eliminating the threat of Green, that should stick better than Bates trying to exact vengeance on his own. But how will Lady Mary find out Green's name?

Other highlights from the episode:
 - Mary scrambling eggs for Blake (Julien Ovenden) after their pig sty adventure. You can see how dubious he is about her kitchen skills.
 - Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) finally taking control again. Whether or not she decided to abort her child, we haven't been thrilled with her helplessness in the past few episodes.
 - The Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), who demonstrates her signature wit even while delirious with fever from her bronchitis. Requesting a nurse who didn't talk so much, she explained, "She's like a drunk vicar."
