Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, lots of people have turned their attention to wondering what's in that tennis-racket-shaped wrapped gift under the Christmas tree. However, Doctor Who fans have a different question on their minds: Will Clara Oswald remain on the series as the Doctor's companion?
Rumors out of the U.K. on Friday say that actress Jenna Coleman won't be leaving the series as previously rumored, and that she will return for another season alongside the new Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi. According to the U.K. tabloid Mirror, Coleman had a change of heart about leaving after the upcoming Christmas special. The outlet also reports that Coleman's decision forced Doctor Who writers to alter the scripts they'd already finished for Season 9 in order to include her character.
But the BBC isn't confirming the report, telling the U.K.'s RadioTimes that "Viewers will have to watch the Christmas episode to find out," and that the special will definitely confirm her fate.
Earlier this month, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed that Peter Capaldi would be returning for Season 9, but was less forthcoming about Coleman's future with the show. Just a few months ago, it was reported that Coleman would be leaving the series.
The Christmas special, which is titled "Last Christmas" and airs December 25 on BBC America, will see the Doctor and Clara trapped on an Arctic base and under attack from creatures. And who should come to their rescue? Santa Claus, of course, courtesy of a guest appearance by Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost.
