Showtime Confirms Dexter Season 8 Will Be the Final Season

Dexter's eighth season will be its last, Showtime officially announced Thursday.

As TVGuide.com first reported last summer, the Dexter producers had always planned for Season 8 to be the final season. "We have worked that out and know where it's going to end," executive producer Sara Colleton told us last June. "I want us to go out on a high, and everybody on the show is determined to keep the level of it up to the very end. It's always wise to know when it's time to leave the stage before you're asked to leave the stage."

The serial killer drama, which debuted in 2006, has garnered 25 Emmy and 10 Golden Globe award nominations over the years. A record-breaking 2.75 million viewers tuned in for the Season 7 finale in December, in which Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) killed La Guerta (Lauren Velez) to protect Dexter (Michael C. Hall).

"Dexter is a landmark franchise for our network, and we cannot wait to unveil the conclusion of this series, as we know it, to the millions of passionate fans who have supported the show season after season," said David Nevins, Showtime's President of Entertainment. "We'd like to thank Michael, Jennifer, and Dexter's indomitable cast, executive producers, writers and crew for eight incredible seasons."
