Following a season of mostly domestic squabbles and rogue American terrorists, Designated Survivor has gone global in Season 2 with higher stake as volatile nations test President Tom Kirkman's (Kiefer Sutherland) mettle as leader of the free world. And this year, Kirkman is going to meet that test by declaring war!

But the question is, with who? We've already seen Kirkman tussle with the likes of Russia, Cuba and a fictional North Korea, but it doesn't sound like these the answer will be so predictable.

"I don't think it will necessarily be a country you'd expect [the U.S. to declare war on]," showrunner Keith Eisner teases. "Now, there could be reasons for that, I'll leave it at that."

That would seem to eliminate the countries mentioned above, as real-world tension with those is well documented. The only other hints we know are that the war will be declared because of something that happens on U.S. soil and a specific character will be unfortunately linked to it.

"Hannah is somewhat instrumental in all of this," Eisner says. "I probably shouldn't say more because I don't want to tip anything. But it will be a first for Kirkman to declare war, and there will be fallout from it."

Designated Survivor airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c on ABC.
