The death of Alex Kirkman (Natascha McElhone) will hang over the back half of Season 2 of Designated Survivor, and particularly over her husband, President Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland).

That level of grief will mess any one up, but how will it affect the President of the United States? Will a man whose convictions and morality have been so strong that he's become the rare leader who can unify a divided country see his legacy threatened by personal tragedy?

Designated Survivor Mega Buzz: Is New Romance Ahead for President Tom Kirkman?

The short answer is yes. When Designated Survivor returns, we will see a side of Kirkman we've never seen before. The show has always banked on the drama of a family man trying to separate himself from his job as leader of the free world, and Tom has been able to do that for the benefit of his country (and sometimes at the cost of his family). But following Alex's death, the two will merge. And that means things will not run smooth from the Oval Office.

But knowing how strong Kirkman is and how many obstacles he's overcome, it'll only be a matter of time before we're screaming for more Kirkman in 2020.

Designated Survivor returns Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 10/9c on ABC.
