Demi Moore announced Thursday that she has decided to divorce Ashton Kutcher after six years of marriage, confirming weeks of rumors.

"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton," Moore, 49, said in a statement obtained by Us Weekly. "As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

"This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."

Kutcher, 33, tweeted his own statement regarding their split soon after. "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi," he wrote. "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."

Ashton Kutcher: Don't assume anything

News of their split comes weeks after Us Weekly reported that Kutcher had a one-night stand with a 22-year-old named Sara Leal back in September — on the day of his and Moore's sixth wedding anniversary. Reports of trouble between the couple surfaced quickly (Star Magazinereported that the two had been living apart for months), but Kutcher took to Twitter a week after his alleged affair urging people not to assume anything.

The Two and a Half Men star then posted a video online last month saying "people can bastardize the truth," seemingly referencing rumors of their impending split. "There is no gatekeeper of the truth ... people can bastardize the truth in any way, shape or form that they want and spread that around the world," he said in the video. "We really have to take it upon ourselves to instill a level of honesty in the works in the media that we create and share with one another and be certain that we are doing our own diligence that what we are saying is for the benefit of another."

Moore and Kutcher married in 2005 after dating for two years.

This was the first marriage for Kutcher and the third for Moore. She was previously married to musician Freddy Moore from 1980 to 1985, and to actor Bruce Willis from 1987 to 2000. Moore and Willis have three children together: Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
