Actor Danny Wells Dies at 72

Actor Danny Wells, who's best known for playing Luigi in the Super Mario Bros. TV series from 1989 to 1991, died Nov. 28 in Toronto, Variety reports. He was 72.

Actor Danny Wells, who's best known for playing Luigi in the Super Mario Bros. TV series from 1989 to 1991, died Nov. 28 in Toronto, Variety reports. He was 72.

Born Jack Westelman in Montreal, Wells also played Charlie the bartender on The Jeffersonsand had guest appearances on shows including Murder, She WroteHappy DaysEight Is Enough and Punky Brewster. His film credits include Magnolia and Private Benjamin.

"Unlike so many of us, Danny followed his dreams: The Catskills, New York, nightclubs around the world, Los Angeles, movies and television," his obituary reads. "He made them laugh and wowed them with his natural gifts. A very funny and talented man, he will be terribly missed by his family."

Wells also did voice-over work, and composed music for the CBS TV special Never Say Never.
