A new take on the classic anime series is in the works
The previously announced live-action adaptation of iconic anime series Cowboy Bebop has found a home, and it's exactly where you'd expect: Netflix. Variety reports that the streaming service has ordered ten episodes of the show, which is based on a seminal anime series from 1998.
The series is described as a jazzy, genre-hopping story about a crew of philosophical bounty hunters who track down space crooks while trying to escape their own pasts onboard the spaceship Bebop. The anime is considered one of the genre's greatest and a gateway series for neophytes. It aired on Adult Swim on 20o1, and was many Americans' intro to anime. A Cowboy Bebop movie also came out in 2001, and Keanu Reeves was attached to a live-action movie adaptation at one point, but it never came to fruition.
But now Netflix has picked it up, because anime series and live-action anime and manga adaptations are some of the many things Netflix does. Last year it released the movie Death Note, a live-action adaptation of a popular manga series, and is developing a live-action version of beloved anime-inspired series Avatar: The Last Airbender. It also has numerous anime series in development and available to stream.
Cowboy Bebop is a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, with original series director Shinichiro Watanabe serving as a consultant. No cast or production date have been set yet.
Cowboy Bebop the anime is available to stream on Hulu (for now).
