American Idolalum Constantine Maroulis was arrested on charges of domestic violence Wednesday, TMZ reports.

Maroulis, 39, allegedly kicked Angel Reed, his girlfriend and the mother of his 4-year-old daughter, in the groin after throwing her on the ground, according to TMZ. Police responded to a 911 call from Reed and arrested Maroulis at the scene. He was later released on bail.

Maroulis' rep tells TMZ he was acting in self-defense during an argument that broke out after he told Reed he was leaving her. He claims she threw something at him and has been violent in the past.

Maroulis finished sixth on Season 4 of American Idol and went on to become a Tony-nominated Broadway star. He and Reed have been dating for six years.
