All Signs Point to Brett and Casey Steaming Things Up on Chicago Fire

Why we think a workplace romance is on the horizon

A divorce from Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) should have sent Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) into a much-needed ho phase, but like that standard issue white polo he loves to rock, his love life has remained a bland affair. Even a fling with a strong-willed reporter didn't do much to revive his abysmal love life. However, that may soon change.

Showrunner Derek Haas previously spoke on the "natural chemistry" between Casey and Brett, and that undeniable connection took center stage in this week's Chicago Fire. The episode, titled "Until the Weather Breaks," saw the firehouse come together to help a young boy who stowed away in Truck 81. More importantly, it laid the groundwork for a potential Brett and Casey romance while also clearing a path for Stellaride to reconcile.

The hour began with Brett (Kara Killmer) and Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) mulling over the rainy weather before turning their mundane conversation to dating within the fire department. For Brett, whose failed relationships include Hazmat Zack and the hunky chaplain, getting romantically involved with another co-worker is not worth the trouble.

"I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying when you find that someone that you really click with, all the rules, the who you should or shouldn't date go out the window," Foster hit back. If that wasn't a clear sign that Brett is about to change her mind and hit up Captain Casey for some TLC, I don't know what is.

While Foster and Brett contemplated office romances, Casey found the perfect remedy for his post-divorce funk: sign up for a program where he'd fly to a random part of the world but wouldn't find out the exact location until the very last minute. Severide (Taylor Kinney) wasn't too keen on committing to the random trip, but Brett, making a strong case to be his next ride-or-die, was immediately on board. Loving look count: Brett - 1, Casey - 0.

Elsewhere, a scared little boy snuck his way into the turnout room just as the thunderstorm intensified. With no idea where he came from or why he was there, the crew quickly jumped into action to find answers and hopefully get him to open up. When the kid began to fall asleep, Brett and Casey moved him to the bunk room to rest before delivering the second major look of the night. Revisiting that conversation about Casey's crazy idea, Brett revealed she always wanted to do it but never had the guts and encouraged Casey to follow through with his plan. That sweet moment was followed up by a gaze from Casey so tender, it's being served as a Gordon Ramsey special. Loving look count: Brett - 1, Casey - 1.

How Antonio, Connor, and Ava Might Leave One Chicago

Caring for the boy must have taken up all their mental bandwidth because no one seemed remotely suspicious of the sketchy guy claiming to be a firefighter who wandered into their common room minutes later. To Otis' (Yuri Sardarov) credit, he did pick up on John Garrett's slip-ups eventually, but not before being clocked in the back of the head. It turns out that the alleged firefighter from Detroit was actually a criminal involved in a double homicide down the road. He followed the kid to Firehouse 51 to shut him up, whatever that meant. Once the crew realized exactly what he was up to, they came together like the superheroes that they are to stop the strange man from harming the boy. Who needs the Avengers when you've got this crew? After apprehending the bad guy, Boden (Eamonn Walker) called in backup in the form of Chicago P.D.'s Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and his amazing hair to close out the case.

Meanwhile, Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Foster came to an understanding about Foster's unprompted pep talk with Severide. Severide had been avoiding Stella since hitting her with a look to end all looks thanks to Foster's warning that he should get his stuff together before pulling Stella back into his life. At first, Stella was upset that Foster would butt into her personal life, but then she realized the outspoken paramedic was only looking out for her. "I will always take up for you, sister. I promise you that," Foster told Stella. With the tension diffused, it's only a matter of time before Severide and Stella work things out on their own.

And after all that teasing, the episode delivered one last Brett and Casey moment to really drive it home. When Brett joked that Casey drew the short straw and was forced into picking her up, Casey was all smiles while assuring her he didn't mind. Going back to Casey's spontaneous trip around the world, Brett inquired about when he planned to do it and then suggested that they get a group together. In other words, they should go together (but with other people as a buffer because she's too scared to admit she's super into him). Brett's questioning prompted one final, lengthy look from Casey that puts Severide's loving gaze at Stella to shame. Brett - 1, Casey - 1,000,000.
