Chelsea Handler will host this year's MTV Video Music Awards, the network announced on Twitter.

"If there's one awards show that I should be hosting, it's probably this one," the Chelsea Lately host told The New York Timesafter the announcement late Wednesday. "My personality probably wouldn't gel with the Emmys or the Golden Globes."

Lady Gaga earns record-breaking 13 VMA nominations

The 35-year-old comedian/author is the first woman to host the ceremony since 1994, and only the third female in the show's 27-year history. Besides her nightly duties on E!, Handler is best known for her best-selling memoirs Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.

MTV general manager Stephen Friedman called Handler an "unexpected" pick.

"And yet," he told the Times, "you look at her following from our audience and it makes sense. They're passionate fans."

Handler plans to host a week of VMA-themed episodes of Chelsea Lately before the ceremony.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 9/8c.
