Charles Osgood announced his retirement from CBS Sunday Morning during this week's broadcast.

"Some of you may have heard rumors lately that I won't be hosting these Sunday Morning broadcasts very much longer. Well, I'm here to tell you that the rumors are true," Osgood said on Sunday. "For years now, people — even friends and family — have been asking me why I keep doing this considering my age. I am pushing 84. It's just that it's been such a joy doing it! Who wouldn't want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together?"

Osgood's final broadcast will be a special 90-minute episode honoring his 45 years at CBS and 22 years at CBS Sunday Morning. The tribute to Osgood will air on Sept. 25, but it won't mark his last appearance on the series. Osgood will continue to make occasional appearances on CBS Sunday Morning, as well as anchor The Osgood File.
