Castle Becomes That '70s Show For a Night

Castle makes a groovy return tonight when Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) take on a quirky case involving the newly discovered body of a missing mobster who was murdered in 1978. "A key witness in the investigation is stuck mentally in the '70s," Katic says, "so in order to find out vital information, we have to reenact the era."

That means the 12th Precinct gets a vintage makeover (goodbye, computers; hello, old-school typewriters!) and the gang gets to don a plethora of polyester. "Naturally, Beckett's not into the idea at first," says Katic, who sported such period-appropriate looks as bell-bottoms and a tangerine, disco-ready Alberta Ferretti gown. "But Castle is all about it."

Of course he is. The mystery novelist views this trip to the past as a perfect opportunity to protect his and Beckett's plans for their upcoming nuptials, which Castle's actress mom, Martha (Susan Sullivan), can't resist meddling in. "He's excited that [this ruse] is taking his mother's focus off their wedding for a little while," Katic says. "Martha helps orchestrate some of the ['70s stuff], thanks to her performing talents."

Katic only hopes the lighthearted flashback is as fun and surprising for viewers as it was for the cast of the show. "I didn't recognize a few of my costars!" laughs the actress. Particularly when it came to Jon Huertas, who plays Detective Esposito with a mustache and Afro, and Seamus Dever (aka Detective Ryan), who sports a shaggy blond wig. Quips Katic, "Those guys look like they're doing their own Hall and Oates special!"

Castle airs Mondays at 10/9c on ABC.
