Box Office: Gatsby Opens Strong, But Iron Man 3 Still Takes Top Spot

The Great Gatsby had a strong opening with $51.1 million at the box office this weekend, but still fell behind Iron Man 3, which claimed the top spot for the second week in a row. The superhero vehicle starring Robert Downey Jr. earned $72.5 million, the fourth-highest second weekend earnings ever (behind The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight), according to Box Office Mojo.

Coming in at No. 3 was Pain and Gainwith $5 million.

Tyler Perry's latest, Peeples, opened in fourth place with $4.85 million, just ahead of Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which fell two spots to No. 5 with $4.65 million.

Oblivion landed at No. 6 with $3.9 million, while The Croods took seventh place with $3.6 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Big Wedding (No. 8, $2.5 million), Mud (No. 9, $2.3 million), and Oz the Great and Powerful (No. 10, $802,000).
