Box Office: Third Hunger Games Installment Wins Slow Weekend

Following a very busy Thanksgiving week for moviegoers, ticket sales dried up like that last bit of turkey you still have in your fridge. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 held the top spot at the weekend box office in what might end up being the second-worst weekend of the year, Box Office Mojo reports.

The adventures of Katniss and her bow took in an estimated $21.6 million, down 62 percent from last week's $56.9 million. Holding the top spot for a third week proved easy, as no new movies were released nationwide. Without new celluloid to stimulate ticket sales, weekend cumulative totals are estimated to be a mere $70.4 million.

Penguins of Madagascar finished second with $11.1 million. Horrible Bosses 2 added $8.6 million to come in at No. 3.

Family film Big Hero 6 was fourth with $8.1 million, and Christopher Nolan's space-set mind scramblerInterstellar earned $8 million to claim the No. 5 spot.

Dumb and Dumber To drummed up $4.2 million for sixth place, while The Theory of Everything, the biopic about brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking, finished at No. 7 with $2.7 million.

Rounding out the top 10: Gone Girl (No. 8, $1.5 million), The Pyramid (No. 9, $1.4 million), and Birdman(No. 10, $1.2 million).
