Box Office: The Equalizer Soars to No. 1

Denzel Washington's new action flick The Equalizer opened in first place this weekend, taking in $35 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. That's the fourth-highest September debut for a film ever.

Denzel Washington's new action flick The Equalizer opened in first place this weekend, taking in $35 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. That's the fourth-highest September debut for a film ever.

Last week's No. 1 film, The Maze Runner, dropped to second place with $17.5 million, edging out animated film The Boxtrolls, which had a modest third-place debut with $17.3 million.

This Is Where I Leave You also dropped a spot, to No. 4 with $7 million, while Dolphin Tale 2 held steady at No. 5 with $4.8 million.

No Good Deed landed in sixth place with $4.6 million.

In its second week in theaters, A Walk Among the Tombstonesexperienced a nearly 67 percent drop-off, falling from second place to seventh place with $4.2 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Guardians of the Galaxy (No. 8, $3.8 million), Let's Be Cops (No. 9, $1.5 million) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (No. 10, $1.4 million).
