The haul was just enough to top last week's top film, Big Hero 6, which earned $36.1 million in its second week. Interstellardropped to third place with $29.2 million.

Beyond the Lights had a soft opening, landing at No. 4 with $6.5 million. It was followed by Gone Girl, which took in $4.6 million in its seventh week in theaters.
Holding steady at No. 6 was St. Vincent with $4 million. Furydropped to seventh place with $3.8 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Nightcrawler (No. 8, $3 million),Ouija (No. 9, $3 million) and Birdman (No. 10, $2.4 million).
