McHale's Navy Star Bob Hastings Dies at 89

Bob Hastings, who portrayed Lt. Elroy Carpenter on McHale's Navy, died after battling pancreatic cancer for 15 years, The Burbank Leader reports. He was 89.

Bob Hastings, who portrayed Lt. Elroy Carpenter on McHale's Navy, died after battling pancreatic cancer for 15 years, The Burbank Leader reports. He was 89.

Born Robert Francis Hastings, he began his career at 11 on radio shows such as The Daily Radio Gang and Adventures in King Arthurland. Hastings then took a break from entertainment to enlist in the Army Air Corps during World War II. When he returned from overseas, Hastings went back to radio, giving voice to the comics icon Archie Andrews until 1953.

Hastings moved to television in 1949, where he appeared on Captain Video and His Video Rangers and Sergeant Bilko. His other credits include All in the Family andGeneral Hospital.

"I miss him. He was a great guy. He was a good father and a good husband," Hastings' younger brother, and As The World Turns star, Don Hastings said. "That's hard to be in show business."

Hastings is survived by his wife Joan and their four children.
