Black Mirror's Latest Season Quietly Concluded Two of the Show's Grimmest Stories

Black Mirror's latest season is here, and in keeping with the tradition of the streaming series, there are a ton of Easter eggs to hunt down in Season 5.

Some of the newest in-references are easier to find than others. For example, almost every fan will notice that the Ashley O. (Miley Cyrus) sleep song is "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)," the unofficial anthem of Black Mirror which has played out in multiple memorable moments throughout the show. However, the fact that the high school in "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" is named after Black Mirror: Bandersnatch's Colin Ritman (Will Poulter) might be a bit more obscure.

As usual, Black Mirror fans will find many of these goodies packed into any scene involving a screen -- usually through a news or social media feed -- and in at least two cases, those tiny text crawls have some significant updates to offer fans of the full series.

"Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" in particular gives fans some closure about what happened after two of Season 4's most upsetting episodes: "Crocodile" and "Black Museum."

As a refresher, "Crocodile" centers on a woman named Mia Nolan (Andrea Riseborough), who becomes a cold-blooded murderer after an insurance claims investigation device -- which can digitally extract memories -- threatens to expose her involvement in an old hit-and-run incident. In the process of covering up that crime, she commits three more murders, each of which is more grisly than the last. The last is the murder of a baby she doesn't know is blind and can't be called upon to draw out a visual of her at the crime scene. She forgets to take out the poor tyke's hamster, though, and as the police scoop the animal out of its cage, it's clear the creature could be a key witness to her most atrocious act. The episode ends with her in emotional ruins at her son's school recital as a police officer appears to linger in the back of the auditorium.

Meanwhile, "Black Museum" ends with Nish (Letitia Wright) revealing herself to be the daughter of the falsely convicted Clayton Leigh, whose consciousness has been digitally preserved so that patrons of Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge)'s sinister museum can torture him with electric shocks again and again to satisfy their sickest desires. She gets revenge by poisoning Haynes and transferring his consciousness into Clayton's digital form so that she can shock him, too, and obtain a souvenir of him suffering through electrocution forever. Then, she manipulates the museum's air conditioner unit so that it begins to spark and ignite in flames, with Haynes' body left behind in the museum.

In both cases, the writing seems to be on the wall, but we don't know for sure what will happen to them. Thanks to Black Mirror's "Ashley Too" episode, though, we can now confirm their fates. The episode's tiny news crawls reveal that an architect -- which was Mia's occupation -- has been arrested on multiple murder counts while a museum owner's body has been discovered in "smoky ruins." It's not an altogether unexpected fate for either character, but it's good to finally know what became of two of Black Mirror's most horrendous characters ever.
