Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife, Tish, have filed for a divorce after 17 years of marriage, his rep tells TVGuide.com.

"As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family," the couple said in a statement obtained by People. "We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers."

The couple filed papers Wednesday in a Tennessee court, citing irreconcilable differences. They have five children together, including pop star Miley Cyrus.
