The M*A*S*H veteran guest stars in the new season of Showtime's cancer dramedy as Dr. Atticus Sherman, a renowned oncologist whom Cathy (Laura Linney) consults for a second opinion. Like any good doctor, he makes us wait: He doesn't even show up in the Season 2 opener. But as soon as he arrives in next week's episode, you feel like Cathy's in good hands — he's Hawkeye Pierce, after all! — and so is the show.
It turns out that in addition to running a promising clinical trial with Stage 4 patients, Dr. Sherman also works as an amateur magician. He'll need to pull a proverbial rabbit out of his hat to save Cathy, but watching Alda work his magic is just what the doctor ordered.
