Fleabag's Andrew Scott to Star as 'the Talented Mr. Ripley' for Showtime

More like the Talented Mr. Hot Priest

Fleabag's Andrew Scott has found his next role. The actor is set to star in Showtime drama series Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith's bestselling Tom Ripley novels, the network announced Wednesday.

Scott will star as the titular character, Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York. In the series, Ripley is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom's acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.

Oscar winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List, The Night Of) will write and direct the entire eight-episode first season.

"We are so thrilled to have the supremely talented filmmaker, Steve Zaillian, adapt the singular saga of Tom Ripley from Patricia Highsmith's novels as an ongoing series for Showtime," said Showtime President of Entertainment Gary Levine in a statement. "With Andrew Scott, whose charisma knows no bounds, inhabiting the iconic lead role, we feel confident that this will be a special one."

Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner, Sharon Levy, and Philipp Keel of Diogenes will executive produce. Scott will also serve as a producer.

Tom Ripley appeared in five novels for Highsmith, though the most memorable and oft-adapted Ripley book is 1955's The Talented Mr. Ripley. A 1999 film based on the novel starred Matt Damon as Ripley and featured Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
