After some time on Broadway, Kerry Washington is returning to television screens in the Netflix movie American Son, based on the play. The first trailer for American Son dropped on Thursday, and the two-minute clip is enough to start an ulcer.
Washington plays Kendra, a distraught mother looking for her missing son, Jamal. However, the police (represented by Supergirl's Jeremy Jordan) seems more preoccupied with Jamal's race and "street name" than his actual whereabouts. Kendra's anxiety is only exacerbated when her estranged husband, played by Stephen Pasquale, arrives. The already tense conversation switches from where Jamal could be to whose fault it is that he went missing in the first place.

While Kendra doesn't have the composure that Washington's iconic Olivia Pope was known for, the trailer proves that the actress still has a way with delivering a powerful speech that shakes you to your core. The "Netflix event" is definitely going to require viewers to get emotionally prepared for a rough ride. The film is directed by Kenny Leon and based on Christopher Demos-Brown's theatrical production.
American Son premieres Nov. 1 on Netflix.
