The Angel of Death. The Ultimate Angel. The "Dark Cousin." Take those in for a minute because that's who American Horror StorySeason 1 vet Frances Conroy was playing on Wednesday's episode of Asylum. And boy, did she make an entrance!
Conroy wasn't kidding when she said her character cut quite the elegant profile. From her (at least) six-foot-wide jet black wings to her luscious ruby red lips, the Angel of Death was irresistible and alluring, sending those out of this world surrounded by fierce beauty and a power no one — probably not even her cousin, the apparent fallen angel inside of Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) — could equal.
So, who met the Angel of Death? Grace (Lizzie Brochere) is the first near-victim, ready to turn herself over and receive the literal kiss of death before being revived by the nuns. The Angel even visits Lana (Sarah Paulson) in Dr. Thredson's (Zachary Quinto) basement, but Bloody Face's latest victim is not yet ready to give up. Lana does eventually escape the basement, only to end up in a car with a suicidal man who, seconds after the Angel of Death appears in the backseat, blows his own brains out. Poor Lana ends up right back in Briarcliff surely wishing she'd just chosen death when she had the chance.
Considering that Jude (Jessica Lange) has attempted suicide before, she's pretty chummy with the Angel who arrives when the Sister envisions slitting her own wrists. She's just about ready to pucker up for that last kiss, but first feels she needs to apologize to the family of the child she'd run over before she became a nun. But Jude gets a reprieve upon learning the child not only survived, but had gone on to become a nurse with a child of her own. Hail Mary, indeed.
Still, the Angel of Death does not go away empty-handed, with Grace — the only person besides Bloody Face who knows Kit's (Evan Peters) wife Alma is apparently alive — taking a bullet to spare Kit's life in the closing moments of the episode.
Are you sad that Grace is dead? Was there someone else the Angel should've claimed? Hit the comments!
