Jonathan E. Steinberg will write and executive-produce the series alongside Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile, who's the writing partner of Liz Tigelaar, now a writer on Once Upon a Time.
In the classic tale, Belle is the youngest daughter of a merchant who has become indebted to the Beast. To fulfill the obligation, she returns to stay in the Beast's enchanted castle, where each night, he asks her to marry him. Beauty and the Beast has been adapted several times, including an Oscar-winning Disney film and the '80s TV series starring Linda Hamilton. More recently Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens starred in Beastly, a modern-day take on the tale.
