New faces and old veterans highlighted the prime-time Emmy nominations Thursday as freshmen series Glee, Modern Family and The Good Wife entered the ballot that includes The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.

Glee led all series with 19 nominations, followed by two-time defending drama series winner Mad Men with 17. HBO received a leading 101 nominations.

The Fox hit, which earned lead comedy acting nominations for stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele, is up for comedy series, alongside Modern Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Nurse Jackie, The Office and three-time defending champion 30 Rock.

"We're grateful and excited. Especially since today is the fifth anniversary of the day NBC forgot to cancel us," cracked 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey.

In the drama series race, The Good Wife and Mad Men will face off against Breaking Bad, Dexter, Lost and True Blood.O'Brien, who entered his Tonight Show for Emmy consideration himself, nabbed a nomination for comedy/variety series, while The Tonight Show with Jay Leno — submitted by NBC — was snubbed. The Emmys air on NBC this year.The Pacific, the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg 10-part HBO miniseries about World War II, collected the most nods overall — 24.Long overlooked by the Emmys, Friday Night Lights finally broke in, scoring lead drama acting nominations for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.Chandler is up against two-time defending champion Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), first-time nominee Matthew Fox (Lost), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Hugh Laurie (House).Britton's competition includes two-time defending winner Glenn Close (Damages), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU), January Jones (Mad Men), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).

Emmys moving to August in 2010

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, who announced the nominations with Community's Joel McHale, earned one of the show's five acting nominations. She and co-star Julie Bowen are up for comedy supporting actress against  Jane Lynch (Glee), Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) and Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men).

Modern Family's men Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are up for supporting comedy actor against Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) and Chris Colfer (Glee).

While HBO received the most nominations, next was ABC with 63 and CBS with 57. NBC got 48, Fox 47 and PBS 32.

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, airs Sunday, Aug. 29 at 8/7c.
