Jakob helps his mother, who sells food on the market in the petty state of duke Kunz the glutton, who neglects all public affairs in favor of his personal pleasure and prestige. When the boy insults a gross dwarf who bothers them, making fun of his ugly big nose, he's lured 'for delivery' to a subterranean labyrinth from where the sorceress, who masqueraded as the dwarf, intrudes in palace affairs. Jakob, who was taught to cook brilliantly by a magical cookbook, is magically transformed into such a dwarf when he awakens after seven years, so his mother no longer recognizes him. Desperately alone, who applies for the post of sous-chef in the ducal kitchen. He gets it, outshining the haughty kitchen master, who can't stomach being degraded deputy chef by Jakob's promotion, even attempts sabotaging.
