Dean Youngblood (Rob Lowe) is a talented young hockey player who's invited to try out for a major league team coached by Murray Chadwick (Ed Lauter). The smooth-skating Lowe makes the team and is befriended by veteran Derek Sutton (Patrick Swayze), while also pursuing the coach's daughter

Jessie (Cynthia Gibb). Lowe clearly is skilled enough to be a hockey player, but his passive nature is at odds with the brutality of the sport. When Sutton is seriously injured by bully Racki (George Finn) in a game, Youngblood heads for home where his father (former Chicago Blackhawk star Eric

Nesterenko) and brother (Jim Youngs) help to face reality. YOUNGBLOOD is little more than a star vehicle for Lowe, who handles the role well enough. The supporting players are fine (especially the always reliable Lauter), but the relationship with Gibb is entirely gratuitous, grafted on merely to

provide a steamy love scene. Like so many youth-oriented films, there's plenty of fancy backlighting, quickly cut montages, and a hard-pounding rock score.
