Scripted by Peter Handke--who cowrote Wim Wenders' THE GOALIE'S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK and WINGS OF DESIRE--this cool, distant film about unsympathetic characters is nonetheless engaging because of the special touch Wenders brings to it. WRONG MOVE centers on aspiring writer Wilhelm

Meister (Rudiger Vogler), who sits in his apartment wondering how he can ever write when he despises people so intensely. At the insistence of his mother, Wilhelm goes out into the world, and during a train ride he meets the old Laertes (Hans Christian Blech), his teenage traveling companion,

Mignon (Nastassja Kinski), and the attractive Therese Farner (Hanna Schygulla). Later, these four hook up with Bernhard Landau (Peter Kern) and wander the streets of Bonn, breaking up soon after Wilhelm discovers that Laertes is a former concentration camp commandant. Like Joseph Bloch, the goalie

in the first Handke-Wenders collaboration who can't even to attempt to block a shot, Wilhelm is incapable of taking action. But like Joseph Bloch, Wilhelm is unable to anything to change himself. Fearful of making a wrong move, he ends up doing nothing, hoping by the film's end that some miracle

will alter his life. A challenging film that purposely lacks the charm found in Wenders' other pictures, WRONG MOVE received awards for Best Picture and Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as being honored for its script, editing, music, and cinematography. (In German; English

subtitles.)
