A modern day re-telling of the old story of Hansel and Gretel, this time taking place in England in the 1920s. To both the children and the staff at a local orphanage, Auntie Roo is a kindly American millionaire and widow who gives 10 orphans a lavish Christmas party every year at her mansion, Forrest Grange. Actually, she is a severely disturbed woman named Mrs. Forrest who keeps the mummified corpse of her little daughter, Katherine, in a nursery in her attic. One Christmas Eve, she sees a little orphan girl named Katy Coombs who resembles Katherine and so she locks her up in the attic. Nobody believes her brother, Christopher, when he tells them what has happened, so he goes to Forrest Grange to rescue her.
