This gritty portrait of teen runaways living, hustling and not always surviving on the streets of Los Angeles is a powerfully acted and disturbing vision of existence on the fringe. Writer-director Marc Rocco and fellow screenwriters Michael Hitchcock and Kurt Voss have clearly done their research for WHERE THE DAY TAKES YOU, allowing the story to ring true even if it sometimes barks a little loudly in the process. King (Dermot Mulroney) has just been released from jail after a three month stay. As part of his parole, and with the enticement of ten dollars cash for each session, he agrees to let a non-threatening interviewer (Laura San Giacomo) videotape him being questioned about his experiences as a young homeless person. Back on the streets, King reunites with his ersatz family of juvenile delinquents, Little J. (Balthazar Getty), a hottempered youth, Crasher (James LeGros), a street philosopher and good soul, and Greg (Sean Astin), a junkie who is losing control of his methamphetamine habit. WHERE THE DAY TAKES YOU has a consistently engaging narrative that resonates with accuracy and honesty.
