THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE garnered much attention because it was the first slasher film to be made by women--written by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), produced and directed by Amy Jones--but a slasher film is still a slasher film and the boasts that this one is

somehow "feminist" are dubious at best. As plotless as any other splatter movie, the film shows a high-school girls' slumber party being invaded by a mad killer wielding a power drill. The big twist here is that the surviving teen bands with her sister and a neighbor girl to dispatch the creep

successfully. While Jones' direction is nothing special, the script by Brown does have its share of male ego-deflating laughs--mainly some obvious Freudian jokes--and actually takes some time to develop the victims as characters instead of mere gore-fodder. A sequel followed.
