Fresnay is a renowned surgeon referred to by his colleagues as "The Chief." His success is met with disfavor by his wife, who feels that she is being ignored. He is more concerned with becoming a member of the prestigious Academy of Medicine than with his wife's requests for more time

together. He finally gives in and agrees to go with her on a second honeymoon, but before they can leave, a seat in the Academy is vacated by a member's death. He reneges on the trip, and his wife resigns herself to being married to a "success." An average film that surprisingly won great acclaim

in France upon its release. It has since disappeared from most moviegoers' memories, as has the body of work produced by director Ciampi. (In French; English subtitles.)
