With a title like this, one might expect another cinematic victory in the Vietnam War or perhaps a successful annihilation of some terrorists. Instead THE PATRIOT is a confusing and altogether silly exercise in adventure redeemed only by its unintentionally funny climax. At a naval storage

base somewhere in the desert, a bunch of Ninja-garbed bad guys led by Atkins (Stack Pierce) easily breach security and heist a couple of atomic bombs. In a nearby town, Matt Ryder (Gregg Henry) is a burned-out Vietnam veteran who is summoned by his old Navy superior (Leslie Nielsen) to help

recover the stolen bombs. Coherence is not exactly the order of the day in THE PATRIOT. The plot twists merrily along with little logic as things grow increasingly confusing. The acting is largely bad, though Nielsen (with a role so small you can't even call it a cameo) provides some comic relief

with a tongue-in-cheek performance. Bullets fly frequently, though the damage they inflict usually resembles red paint sloppily dabbed onto costumes. The rig-mounted fight sequence is poorly edited, with lots of jump cutting and clumsy looking stunt work.
