Inspired by the accomplishments of Mary McCleod Bethune, who made and sold so many sweet potato pies that, with her earnings, she established many schools for the under-privileged, this film was funded by the world-wide Moral Rearmament Groups, founded by Dr Frank Buchman of which its Narrator Joel McCrea and his son Jody were sponsoring members.
