Roman plays an alcoholic psycho whose husband ran off years earlier, leaving her with an infant son. To express her hatred for men, she keeps her so-called "baby" (a mentally retarded teenager) in diapers, gurgling in his play pen. A social worker, Comer, uncovers the situation and attempts to rescue the youth. Competently directed by the always-interesting Ted Post (HANG 'EM HIGH; GO TELL THE SPARTANS), THE BABY, despite its occasional lapses into genuine bad taste (exploiting the retarded) is fairly effective and contains a truly surprising twist ending. Comer was also

featured in THE LOVED ONE (1965); RABBIT RUN (1970); and the unforgettable Spanish horror epic NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CATS (1974).
