This forced comedy feels too long, although John Candy's unique manner sometimes overcomes Carl Reiner's flat direction. The cliched story line and the general feeling that everyone was working in a hurry for money is what sinks this film. Jack Chester (Candy) is an air traffic controller

who is under such stress that he shouts instructions to a fly that's crawling on his TV monitor. He is told to take a long vacation. With wife Sandy (Karen Austin), their three children, and their dog, Jack takes off for Citrus Cove, Florida, a quiet resort where he hopes to regain his balance.

Trouble comes when Jack learns that his belief that they would have a house on a private beach is a mistake. The family must stay instead in a tacky, dilapidated shack on a constantly crowded public beach. Jack never gets his much-needed rest as his family is beset by one cliched problem after

another. Rip Torn is excellent in his role as a rascally restaurant owner. He can usually make even the silliest part seem real, and his performance here is the only fresh thing about this movie.
