might have been if Moore hadn't reshaped the project to accommodate the formidable dimensions of her ego. Erin Grant, a strong-willed single mom who strips to survive, is a secondary character in Carl Hiaasen's novel, but Moore moved her front and center, inflating the role with endless close-ups,

syrupy scenes of mother-daughter bonding and three rather awkward strip routines. (Hiaasen's hero, here played by poor Armand Assante, gets about five minutes of screen time.) Comic relief -- and we do mean relief -- is intermittently supplied by Burt Reynolds as a wet-brained congressman whose

obsession with Grant leads to murder and mayhem. Otherwise, it's all about the vaunted unveiling of Demi's breasts, which should be of keen interest to 15-year-old boys. The rest of us will be far more intrigued by her quite visible stretch marks -- welcome and poignant evidence of a superstar's

indelible humanity.
